Short post today — getting late for bed!!

Do you love napping after a long day? I know I do…(And, I also know I overdo it sometimes!)

But the question is…do naps help you or harm you? Just read on and I’ll let you know the full deal on naps and napping

I just finished reading an excellent book on sleep – sleeping less, becoming more energetic etc and one of the interesting thing the author talks about is the concept of naps.

And here’s the news:

Napping is good for you as long as you don’t overdo it! A short 30-45 min nap will give you a ton of energy without pushing you down into deep sleep which makes it harder to get up and become productive.

~ Powerful Sleep

Apparently it’s all about our sleep cycle and Kacper (the author) has a ton of great graphs to show you how the sleep cycle goes on… It’s pretty cool..but what’s cooler is the fact that a short 30-45 minute nap can really boost your productivity..

AND…help you clear your head. I usually take a nap when I have a big decision to make and I’m completely split or after a really long and tiring day. The nap helps me get up and get back straight to work. It’s a good way to let your brain relax (and find you answers without you having to think about it)

I have changed my mind about Dragon NaturallySpeaking a couple times. I had tried in the past and found it not too impressive.

I also tried it earlier this year-a new version that is. And while the new version seemed like a huge improvement over the old one, it still wasn’t enough to make me want to either buy it or even use that.

Well to make a long story short I tried it again today and I was pretty impressed with the newest version.

The new version only took a couple minutes of training and was able to recognize my speech pretty flawlessly.

I’m definitely impressed.

Now I can usually type faster than I can dictate… but sometimes it’s good to be able just talk and have the words appear on your screen… of course, you have to do a bit of editing but it’s fun nonetheless-especially when you’re tired or feel like putting off the blog post.

So do I recommend Dragon NaturallySpeaking?

Well the answer [for now] is I actually like the program very much.

I’d use it everytime I feel like procrastinating (but need to get stuff done) or need to give my fingers a bit of rest (come to think of it..it may be a great solution to my carpal tunnel)

You can start off with a free trial just go to their website and download a free trial and see what you think of it.

and by the way if you’re wondering this blog post that you’re reading right now was done through Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

If you decide to download it or if you’ve tried in the past let me know what you think about it…

This book has been on my to-read list for a while and I just got the opportunity to read it today so naturally I jumped at it

Seymour Schulich is a Canadian billionaire and philanthropist. He has donated a lot of money to some of Canada’s best post secondary institutions. And he has two colleges named after him – the Schulich School of Business, York and the Schulich School of Engineering, Calgary.

Anyhow…all that aside..here’s what you can expect from the book

The Book

I was looking for some reviews before spending time reading the book and wow, I came across a ton of negatives – “it’s full of fluff” reviews…But, that said…I just had to check this book out…

I wasn’t checking this book out because it’s a national best seller or because Schulich is a billioniare (ok, maybe I was)..but, the main reason I read the book (and felt obligated) was because of the Schulich School of Engineering…I had to find out what this guy who donated $25 million to my college had to say..didn’t I?

The book is mainly written for an audience aged 20-30 years and is mostly a “the lessons I’ve learned in my life” book (which is what makes it excellent).

Each chapter is short and contains just enough information without trying to make the book an encyclopedia about life.

The very first chapter is probably one of the most valuable chapters in the whole book. He talks about how to make decisions, how to weigh your options and how to choose what the best thing at any instant is… and gives a really cool working system to make big decisions in life.

The book isn’t meant to solve any problems but instead to provide directions mostly to college students and aspiring entrepreneurs.

I suppose it’s easy to dismiss all the chapters as cliche or whatever..but the important part is…the cliches are important and useful.

It maybe stuff you’ve heard hundred times over and over again but that doesn’t make the book bad or a waste of time..

Sometimes all we need is a different perspective on the cliches..and this is Seymour Schulich’s perspectives..

Besides, there’s no point expecting something new or earth shattering everytime you open a book, all the secrets are out – nothing’s hidden…

My Recommendation

I give the book a 9/10. The only bad thing I have to say is..the organization of the chapters seems a little odd at times. And, the latter half of the book is specifically for 30-40 year olds…more about investments etc. and it sort of bored me

Overall, it’s a good book/program to own for the moments when you feel like all hell has broken lose or when you feel like giving up and hiding somewhere.

I highly recommend getting a copy of it for those occasions.

The program may offend some people, it’s a bit in your face style but hey, that does help create some big changes. Sometimes you have to take careful steps to make big changes and sometimes you have to catch the wave and let it take you high and low.

I don’t agree with everything in the book but I think it’s one of the many effective ways to look at things. And, this approach can work very well for a lot of people. It did for me right when I first went up against my fear of failure. Later, I found a way to use my fear of failure for positive changes but at that point, this book was a tremendous help (perhaps some of it came merely from realizing I wasn’t alone!)

Why I got both the audio and the ebook

Well, I first bought the audio but I got bored..I am not a big fan of huge lists, I prefer 10 or 20 things with action steps. But, I thought the program was quite interesting and something of value which is why I bought the book.

The book is very well formatted. Each concept is about a page with an explanation and…guess what?…Action Steps!

I likes action steps

My Recommendation:

Get the book and keep it even if you don’t read it now. It will be useful when you experience a sudden rush of “Can I really do this” “What if This fails” “Can I please just hide”

When you’ve lost all your strength..this book will show you how to get more.

10/10

P.S. This is a review of the CD program, I haven’t read the book. Only listened to the audio.

Despite minor things I didn’t like about this, this program is something of great value.

I would highly recommend it to anyone having some beliefs problems in the financial area.

I’m not going to do a I like/I don’t like section for this program because there are stuff I don’t like but those aren’t as important as the 14 principles T. Harv Eker introduces you to. This can make a huge impact in your life.

It did for me..especially when it came to principle number 8. It’s been a big one in my life..tied in with some of my greatest fears in life too. I don’t know if it was this book by itself but I remember listening to the tape..principle 8 and I had a sudden inspiration that helped me overcome this fear/negative belief.

It was something I working on at the moment though but it triggered an even that I’m really grateful for. I think I released my first product a couple weeks after the event. The product didn’t do well but it was a really important lesson/ turning point in my life.

1.	Rich people believe “I create my life.” Poor people
believe, “Life happens to me.”
2.	Rich people play the money game to win. Poor people
play the money game to not lose.
3.	Rich people are committed to being rich. Poor people
want to be rich.
4.	Rich people think big. Poor people think small.
5.	Rich people focus on opportunities. Poor people focus
on obstacles.
6.	Rich people admire other rich and successful people.
Poor people resent rich and successful people.
7.	Rich people associate with positive, successful
people. Poor people associate with negative or
unsuccessful people.
8.	Rich people are willing to promote themselves and their
value. Poor people think negatively about selling and
promotion.
9.	Rich people are bigger than their problems. Poor
people are smaller than their problems.
10.	Rich people are excellent receivers. Poor people are
poor receivers.
11.	Rich people choose to get paid based on results. Poor
people choose to get paid based on time.
12.	Rich people think “both.” Poor people
think “either/or.”
13.	Rich people focus on their net worth. Poor people
focus on their working income.
14.	Rich people manage their money well. Poor people
mismanage their money well.
15.	Rich people have their money work hard for them. Poor
people work hard for their money.
16.	Rich people act in spite of fear. Poor people let fear
stop them.
17.	Rich people constantly learn and grow. Poor people
think they already know.

My Recommendation:

I highly recommend this program if you have belief issues in the financial area. It really can make a big difference in your life.

I’d give it a 9.5/10

What are your thoughts on the book?

I think I came across Steven K Scott’s Mentored by a Millionaire – Master Strategies of the Super Rich a couple months ago. Probably around January.

Why am I writing the review now? I think it’s worth it..

Mentored by a Millionaire is by far one of the BEST personal development programs I’ve listened to or read about. P.S. I did listen to the CD so this is a review of the audio program by Nightingale Conant.

Anyhow..here’s the good things about the book:

1. Steven Scott definitely knows how to get the point across. I loved his use of the Porsche analogy. Definitely thought out and used effectively. He also talks about his communication method in one of the lessons.

2. Ready to use Strategies - If you’ve read my ebook, you know I like action steps that get things done. Theory is good for some thought provoking deep thinking but I like stuff that helps me get things done where the rubber hits the road. The program introduces the theory and then gives you some strategies to implement right now. That alone sets it apart from a lot of personal development products.

Here’s what I like about the program

1. Challenging yourself – I’m big on this. I set goals that stretch me – not just a little but quite a bit. It could be my personality but I love a challenge especially when it seems impossible at first.

You’ve heard those jokes about engineers haven’t you?

The fastest way to get an engineer to solve a problem is to declare that the problem is unsolvable. No engineer can walk away from an unsolvable problem until it’s solved. No illness or distraction is sufficient to get the engineer off the case. These types of challenges quickly become personal — a battle between the engineer and the laws of nature.

But, I don’t think it’s just about engineers, in fact, I know engineers who HATE challenges. I think it’s more dependant on your personality than your profession. BTW, I don’t think either way is right or wrong..they are both probably right…but challenging myself is definitely something that works for me.

Find out what works for you and put it to work

2. Pretty Good Explanation of Life Skills

I liked the fact that each skill had a section of it’s own with tips to develop it. The book was definitely well planned out. There are also exercises for you to do at specific points – another good thing. Listening to something can be motivational but doesn’t change much if you don’t act on it. So, even little actions are good.

For those of you who struggle with memory, there’s a memory exercise to help you remember 20 random objects easily as well.

Then, there are more life changing exercises like finding the most important areas of your life so you can develop all of them at once..

3. The dream conversion process

This one is an important part of the program..very well thought out as well. It’s aimed at helping you take your dreams and take it all the way to what you’re going to do right now to get to your dreams. I can’t emphasize the importance of this thing enough.

My Recommendations:

If you’re looking for something to listen to, get this program. It may just change your life and point you in the right direction. I love it. I listen to various parts of it on a regular basis – always something valuable to pick up.

This one will be a 11/10

I picked up some books from the library yesterday…So, expect a couple book reviews.

Anyhow I got a chance to Screw it, Let’s Do it Anyway by Richard Branson this morning. It’s a pretty short book and that’s what makes it fun. I love it when I can pick up a book and only get the important points, put it down and know what the point was.

It’s definitely a good for an early morning read.

Here’s what I like about the book..

1. The focus on striving for success

Let’s rephrase that how about the focus on striving for YOUR success? I think quite a few of us strive for success as other people define it. Nothing wrong with that, you’re still getting somewhere (hopefully somewhere good)…but, it’s also important to understand what your personal view of success is.

And, please, don’t waste too much time on it (even though this one requires clear thinking and getting inside, don’t let the task become BIG and eat you up)..try different things and you’ll find out which one clicks.

2. Respect others and their ideas

I really liked the section on this one. I won’t name names but it seems some people lose respect for others and their ideas as soon as they smell success. That kinda sucks doesn’t it?

A lot of times you maybe missing out on some very profitable ideas just because you’re tuning out everyone who hasn’t achieved the level of your success. On the same note, I also find people who tune out other people and their ideas do the same to themselves without really knowing it.

Of course, giving others respect doesn’t mean letting them run your life. That’s your job.

3. Living in the moment

This one seemed like a chapter taken straight out of some of the best books on Spirituality. But, I’m glad it was there.

4. Making decisions and taking action..

Alright, that’s the main focus of the book, isn’t it? Here’s what’s cool about it..I’ve read a lot of books on execution, taking action and the like, I’ve listened to many motivational tapes on making decisions. But, you know what?

I’ve always sat down there saying “Well, yeah decisions are good but rushed decisions without the analysis aren’t going to get you anywhere. It’s like saying you want to build a bridge and then picking up the materials without any analysis”

So, I like the balance between analysis and decision making. It’s a critical portion of my life atleast. I know analysis can sometimes lead to paralysis (when you let it)..but you also have to remember even the best analysis has to leave room for error.

You do sometimes need to accept “good enough information” about a problem or you’ll sit there analyzing while someone else does the work and gets the results.

Analyzing well enough is very important, it will add to your confidence and also allow you to act on your dreams, use your time wisely and get things done.

Which btw, is something I talk about a lot in the Avoid Procrastination bonus for Manage Your Time Now

5. Your Support Network

Do You have a support network? People who you can turn to when everything goes wrong? People who can listen to you and point you in the right direction?

It’s difficult to be out there going for your goals and facing your fears without any support.

Who can be in your support network? Hopefully your family, if not, close friends are good family too.

I think too many personal development books, tapes etc try to make you a lone warrior, that’s alright..they’re helping you build your self esteem and stand up for yourself but when you are a lone warrior who gets bruised, if you don’t get nursed you’re going to lose a lot of blood.

You’ll get there eventually even without a support network but I think having one makes the journey more enjoyable.

6. Have fun in what you do..

I likes fun

Recommendations

I’d recommend it for a quick read.

10/10

Anyone else read the book? What do you think?
