Have you realized how Avoiding and stopping procrastination have become the buzz words of today? Does the massive media coverage on procrastination surprise you? Turns out, avoiding procrastination and managing your time well has always been the top interest..But Guess what? SO many of us struggle with the deadly killer called procrastination..
I know I used to struggle with procrastination a lot. I never thought I could “get out” of it. I read almost every book I could find and at the end of the day..I was exactly where I didn’t want to be.
How does Stopping Procrastination Feel?
Fast forward to today..I can set almost any goal and KNOW procrastination isn’t going to be an issue. I don’t have to convince myself that my ideas aren’t good enough if I’m feeling too lazy to work on them. And that feels incredible.
There’s nothing like getting up in the morning and knowing that if you setup a goal..you’re going to get it. No matter what..
So, how do you Avoid Procrastination?
The answer is simple and complex at the same time. Simple because all you need to do to avoid procrastination is to get absolutely clear about your goals and let your goals drive you.
But first, what are the causes of procrastination?
Procrastination arises from lack of clarity and confusion. Let’s take a simple example..
Let’s say you have a report due this friday (that’s 2 days from now)…and you aren’t sure what your boss wants out of it. How do you feel doing the report? Confused? If you’re like most of us, you’ll do everything you can to put it off until Thursday night..
Confusion is the first thing we need to tackle. Our mind likes to be very clear about what we’re “supposed” to do. So as long as we don’t address this issue pro actively, we cannot expect much efficiency and productivity…
What about the other big cause of Procrastination?
The Monster effect? Have you ever looked at a task and gotten completely overwhelmed just by how complex it looks? Yeah me too. And you know how that generally works out…you end up looking back at it after you’ve finally tackled the beast and talk about how “easy” it was..
Turns out, the simplest way to deal with these tasks is to again get clear about what you want out of it.
So, remember the mantra..
To avoid procrastination, you need to…I repeat..you absolutely need to know what you (or your boss, management, administration, parents) want out of a task…
So, what is the one big task that’s on your mind right now and if you’ve been putting it off..how you do plan to tackle it?
