Are You a GoalSetter?

By Rigdha | May 22, 2008

I recently read a journal article in the Journal Of Psychology from 2001. Here’s what it was titled
Managing Time: The Effects of Personal Goal Setting on Resource Allocation Strategy and Task Performance

I found the article quite fascinating. It talked about how setting goals effected time management and guess what they found? They found that people who set goals spent less time switching between tasks and actually got stuff done.

They found that people who set goals were  more strategic as they had to choose between tasks when the “so much to do and not enough time” syndrome kicked in.

What’s in it for you and me?

Here’s my major takeaway from the article..

1. ALWAYS set goals. (I use the word always quite sparingly but I think this is a perfect time to use it and emphasize it too)

2. If You can’t find enough time to do what’s most important to you, start off by setting your goals.

One day, I’d like to be rich IS NOT a goal, it’s a dream. Goals have to be specific and time oriented as well.

3. Always make a to-do list (which btw, acts as a list of goals for the day)

4. A lot of people think that self improvement is all hocus pocus and here’s something for you..It’s not! There’s research data to prove the principles of self improvement.

5. If you don’t know how to set goals or what to do with this new information, check out Manage My Time Now - The Time Manual That Will Transform Your Life. While I wasn’t aware of this paper when I wrote it, I’m happy to report that my personal observations are supported by the findings of this paper.

6. Take Control of your Time NOW

Have a good one :)
