Almost everyone blogging about time management or talking about time management in any form talks about to do lists and why you need to use them to get stuff done..
While that’s a really good point to start..what most people miss is the many other ways you can use your to do lists to not only manage your time but also to manage your life, reduce stress and even manage your relationships…
Let’s talk about just 3 of them..
1. Schedule your relationships
While most people will happily schedule everything they need to get done at work..people rarely schedule their relationships..
Which is odd if you think about it..
I mean..if your relationships are incredibly important to you (which I’m sure they are)…why not spend sometime trying to make sure you have time for your family?
Use your to do lists to:
1. Keep an account of all the commitments you make to your friends and family
Not to keep a count of it..but to make sure you don’t forget it!
Sometimes you do need a reminder to do the simple stuff that mean a lot when you’re dealing with major issues and projects in your work life.
2. Keep a list of things to do when you’re bored
Boredom is really a natural human emotion..you may not like it but it’s part of the package.
The best thing to do when you feel bored and want to just procrastinate and/or do nothing is to take your list of things to do when you’re bored and then start on it! Just pick on that’s pretty important and get it done…
You’ll get more done this way than if you try to fight off an emotion as natural as boredom!
3. 10 minute cleanup
I have a 10 minute cleanup rule at home. Which means at the end of the day…there’s always 10 minutes devoted to throwing away the trash, tidying up my desk (so I can mess it up even more the next day), picking up papers that have been mispaced, filing things that have fallen out of place and so on..
It’s not a lot…but trust me it does add up..and before you know it..you’ll have your organization nailed!
The ten minute rule works in two ways..
1. it takes the fear of organizing out – I mean, it’s only 10 minutes right…HA! I can do it! If anything takes longer than 10 minutes…guess what? I don’t have to deal with it!
2. Most things take only 10 minutes to organize – You’ll be surprised by how easy it is to stay organized and on top of things when you do it consistently everyday…. the reason most people get overwhelmed is because they aren’t consistent…they put it off until they just can’t handle it…And then, they freak out because it’s too much work.
