I was reading a conversation at a forum today and the main question was…”Who are the people who read self help books and why”

I didn’t chime in to the discussion because here’s how that went..

  • The only people who he knows of that read self help books were pathetic
  • Reading books don’t solve problems
  • And that positive thinking doesn’t work

Nothing wrong with that..he or she is entitled to his opinions and I respect it.

But, I thought I’d bring up the topic here..

Have you ever met people who basically sat there and laughed at you because you were into all this “crazy” stuff?

Ever met people who think the self improvement industry is just a “big lie” out there only to earn money?

Yeah, I have…In fact, some of the people who mean the most to me have said the very same thing to me over and over again.

It’s definitely painful..I won’t deny that fact a bit. It hurts when you are laughed at and joked at by the people who mean the MOST to you in your life.

My reason for bringing up this topic is to say…even if people accuse you of being pathetic and crazy for reading self improvement books..do it anyway.

Here’s my question to you..

Who would you rather listen to?

A thousand people who’ve never thought they could achieve something extra ordinary?

Or, one person who have achieved something extra ordinary?

To me, the choice is clear..

And…for the people who think you’re crazy…only time will tell :)

Of course just reading books won’t do you nothing..you’ve also got to take the principles you learn and put them into action!

Yours truly,

Crazy Self Improvement Freak ;)

  1. Hi Rigdha,

just found your blog and LOVE it! And it’s so cool to find a fellow self-help freak (I prefer “junkie” or “fan,” personally, but it doesn’t change the point. It’s great to meet you!).

And I totally agree. Why listen to those who don’t bother to read anything that might inspire them to grow? I prefer to seek out others who share my interests in self-growth, self-impowerment, and self-help.

Thanks also for the fantastic article about organizing bookmarks! Firefox really ate your bookmarks?! How horrible! I’ll definitely have to give Diigo a shot!

    All best,

    Hi Elisabeth,

Great to see you here and lovely meeting you!

I’m not sure if firefox ate my bookmarks or if I installed something that wiped them out! Not sure whose fault it was but…yeah, it happened twice!

let me know what you think about Diigo..I love being able to highlight stuff online..

Excellent point about choosing who to listen to!

    :)

    Good points.

I worry about people that are addicted to self-help in its various manifestations. Another way to say this is… we must be saving at least as much time from learning about time management as we spend doing that learning. That’s just sensible time management, right?

So I would encourage people to make their judgements based on those metrics instead of any prejudgements. That said, I’m sorry you’re getting a ribbing from friends (I put up with a lot of that too.)

    Hang in there!
